to laugh loudly, to guffaw

Examples

Они́ хохота́ли до упа́ду.

a-née ha-ha-tá-lee da u-pá-du

They split their sides with laughter.
Что ты хохо́чешь, как ненорма́льный?

chto ty ha-hó-chesh kak nye-nar-mál'-nyî

What are you laughing about like crazy?

так тебе́ и на́до [tak tee-byé ee ná-da] Phrase

you asked for it!, it serves you right!

Examples

Меня́ чуть то́ком не уда́рило. - Так тебе́ и на́до, не бу́дешь лезть куда́ не про́сят.

mee-nyá chut' tó-kam nye u-dá-ree-la. - tak tee-byé ee ná-da, nye bú-deesh lyezt' ku-dá nye pró-syat

I almost got electrocuted. - You asked for it, next time you won't go where you are not asked to.
Андре́я с рабо́ты уво́лили. - Так ему́ и на́до, давно́ пора́ бы́ло!

and-ryé-ya s ra-bó-ty u-vó-lee-lee. - tak ye-mú ee ná-da, dav-nó pa-ra bý-la!

Andrei got fired from his job. - He deserves it, should have done it long ago!

за́дним число́м [zád-neem chees-lóm] Phrase

post factum, backdating

Examples

Они́ подписа́ли контра́кт за́дним число́м.

a-née pad-pee-sá-lee kant-rákt zád-neem chees-lóm

They signed the contract backdated.
Мы то́лько за́дним число́м сообрази́ли в чём де́ло.

my tól'-ka zád-neem chees-lóm sa-ab-ra-zée-lee v chom dyé-la

We only figured out the matter later.

заи́грывать [za-éeg-ry-vat'] Verb, imperfective

to flirt

Examples

По-мо́ему, он с тобо́й заи́грывает.

pa-mó-ee-mu, on s ta-bóî za-éeg-ry-va-eet

In my opinion, he is flirting with you.
Весь ве́чер он заи́грывал с хоро́шенькими де́вушками.

vyes' vyé-chyer on za-éeg-ry-val s ha-ró-sheen'-kee-mee dyé-vush-ka-mee

All evening he flirted with pretty girls.

упусти́ть [u-pus-téet'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - упуска́ть

to miss, to overlook, to let go / slip

Examples

Вы упусти́ли из ви́ду одну́ суще́ственную дета́ль.

vy u-pus-tée-lee eez vée-du ad-nú su-schyést-veen-nu-yu dee-tál'

You have overlooked one essential detail.
Что́бы ничего́ не упусти́ть, мы реши́ли соста́вить спи́сок.

отда́ть до́лжное [at-dát' dólzh-na-ye] Phrase

to give/render somebody his due, to pay tribute to

Examples

На́до отда́ть им до́лжное, они́ хорошо́ спра́вились с зада́чей, несмотря́ на недочёты.

ná-da at-dát' eem dólzh-na-ye, a-née ha-ra-shó sprá-vee-lees' s za-da-cheî, nees-mat-ryá na nee-da-chó-ty

We must give them their due, they did well with the task, despite the shortcomings.

ЗАГС [zags] Abbreviation

registry office (abbr. for за́пись а́ктов гражда́нского состоя́ния)

Examples

Регистра́ция в ЗА́ГСе в четы́ре часа́.

rye-geest-rá-tsee-ya v zág-sye v chee-tý-rye chee-sá

Registration in the registry office is at four o'clock.
Мы по́дали заявле́ние в ЗАГС.

ду́ться [dú-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - наду́ться

to sulk , to pout

Examples

Хва́тит ду́ться!

za chto lyé-na na tee-byá dú-ee-tsa

Why is Lena pouting at you?

прозева́ть [pra-zee-vát'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - зева́ть

to yawn (throughout); to miss an opportunity

Examples

Он прозева́л весь ве́чер.

on pra-zee-vál vyes' vyé-cher

He has been yawning all evening.
Не хочу́ прозева́ть тако́й удо́бный слу́чай.

nye ha-chú pra-zee-vát' ta-kóî u-dób-nyî slú-chaî

I don't want to miss such a good opportunity.
