Russian verbs used with the Instumental

The list of common Russian verbs often used with the Instrumental case.

Some of the verbs take the Instrumental case without any preposition, others require a preposition in front of the noun or a pronoun to be used with the Instrumental case.

Please note that not all of the given examples illustrate the use of the Instrumental case with the verbs.

помога́ть [pa-ma-gát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - помо́чь

to help

Examples

Таки́е ме́ры не то́лько не помога́ют, но и вредя́т.

ta-kée-ye myé-ry nye tól'-ka nye pa-ma-gá-yut, no ee vree-dyát

Such measures not only do not help but also harm.
Лимо́н помога́ет укрепи́ть имму́нную и не́рвную систе́мы, а та́кже явля́ется антиоксида́нтом.

lee-món pa-ma-gá-eet uk-ree-péet' ee-mún-nu-yu ee nyérv-nu-yu sees-tyé-my, a ták-zhe yav-lyá-ye-tsa an-tee-ak-see-dán-tam

Lemon helps to strengthen the immune and nervous systems and is also an antioxidant.

запо́мниться [za-póm-nee-tsa] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - запомина́ться

to stick in one's memory, to be imprinted on ones's mind

Examples

Он нам запо́мнился как челове́к, не стесня́ющийся говори́ть пра́вду.

on nam za-póm-neel-sya kak chee-la-vyék, nye stees-nyá-yu-schéeî-sya ga-va-réet' práv-du

We remember him as a person who did not hesitate to speak the truth.
Мне запо́мнились его́ слова́.

mnye za-póm-nee-lees' ye-vó sla-vá

I remember his words.

подмета́ть [pad-mee-tát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - подмести́

to sweep

Examples

Убо́рщица подмета́ет здесь ка́ждый день.

u-bór-schee-tsa pad-mee-tá-eet zdyes' kázh-dyî dyen'

The cleaning lady sweeps here every day.
Что́бы зарабо́тать, они́ подмета́ли доро́жки.

chtó-by za-ra-bó-tat', a-nee pad-mee-tá-lee da-rósh-kee

To make money, they swept the streets.

полива́ть [pa-lee-vát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - поли́ть

to water, to pour

Examples

Расте́ния в огоро́де мы не полива́ем, им доста́точно есте́ственной вла́ги.

ras-tyé-nee-ya v a-ga-ró-dye my nye pa-lee-vá-eem, eem das-tá-tach-na yes-tyést-veen-naî vlá-gee

We do not water the plants in the garden, they have enough natural moisture.
Их та́ктика - полива́ть оппоне́нта гря́зью не фокуси́руясь на аргуме́нтах.

eeh ták-tee-ka - pa-lee-vát' a-pa-nyén-ta gryáz'-yu nye fa-ku-sée-ru-yas' na ar-gu-myén-tah

Their tactic is to sling mud at the opponent without focusing on the arguments.

ви́деться [vée-dee-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - уви́деться

to see one another, to be seen

Examples

Я ви́жусь с ним ка́ждый день.

ya vée-zhus' s neem kázh-dyî dyen'

I see him every day.
Большо́е ви́дится на расстоя́нии.

bal'-shó-ye vée-dee-tsa na ras-ta-yá-nee-ee

Big things are seen at a distance.

взя́ться [vzyá-tsa] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - бра́ться

to touch, to undertake, to start doing something; to appear

Examples

Отку́да э́то взяло́сь?

at-kú-da é-ta vzee-lós'

Where did this come from?
Мы не возьмёмся за э́ту рабо́ту на таки́х усло́виях.

my nye vaz'-myóm-sya za é-tu ra-bó-tu na ta-kéeh us-ló-vee-yah

We will not take this job on such terms.

держа́ть [deer-zhát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - подержа́ть

to hold, to keep, to support

Examples

Держи́ меня́ за́ руку.

deer-zhée mee-nyá zá ru-ku

Hold my hand.
Она́ держа́ла в рука́х сто́пку книг.

a-ná deer-zhá-la v ru-káh stóp-ku kneek

She was holding a stack of books in her hands.

мы́ться [mýt'-sya] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - помы́ться, вы́мыться

to wash oneself

Examples

Они́ мы́лись и стира́ли в реке́.

a-née mý-lis' ee stee-rá-lee v ree-kyé

They washed themselves and their clothes in the river.
Он мо́ется в ду́ше.

on mó-ee-tsa v dú-she

He is taking a shower.

помо́чь [pa-móch'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - помога́ть

Examples

Он помо́г мне донести́ су́мки.

on pa-mók mnye da-nees-tée súm-kee

He helped me carry the bags.
Мы помо́жем тебе́ с твои́м прое́ктом.

my pa-mó-zheem tee-byé s tva-éem pra-ék-tam

We will help you with your project.

извиня́ться [eez-vee-nyá-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - извини́ться

to make excuses; to apologize; to say sorry

Examples

Не извиня́йтесь, э́то моя́ вина́.

nye eez-vee-nyáî-tyes', é-ta ma-yá vee-ná

Don't apologize, this was my fault.
Я о́чень извиня́юсь, но оста́ться с ва́ми не могу́.

ya ó-cheen eez-vee-nyá-yus', no as-tá-tsa s vá-mee nye ma-gú

I am very sorry, but I cannot stay with you.
