Russian words for beginners

In the section “Russian Words for Beginners” you can find basic Russian vocabulary that will help you to gain some confidence in making basic conversations and don’t look for your words when you want to express some simple ideas in Russian.

по́лный [pól-nyî] Adjective

full, packed, crowded; complete, total; full-bodied, chubby, rotund, plump

Examples

Высоко́ в не́бе свети́ла по́лная луна́.

vy-sa-kó v nyé-bye svee-tée-la pól-na-ya lu-ná

The full moon shone high in the sky.
Дыха́ние по́лной гру́дью помога́ет те́лу рассла́биться.

dy-há-nee-ye pól-naî grúd'-yu pa-ma-gá-eet tyé-lu ras-lá-bee-tsa

Breathing deeply helps the body to relax.

пригото́вить [pree-ga-tó-veet'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - гото́вить

to prepare, to make ready; to cook

Examples

Я пригото́вила ры́бу на у́жин.

ya pree-ga-tó-vee-la rý-bu na ú-zheen

I cooked fish for dinner.
Мы пригото́вили ему́ сюрпри́з.

my pree-ga-tó-vee-lee ye-mú syur-prées

We prepared a surprise for him.

обща́ться [ap-schá-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - пообща́ться

to communicate, to associate, to socialize

Examples

По до́лгу слу́жбы я ча́сто обща́юсь с иностра́нцами.

pa dól-du slúzh-by ya chás-ta ap-schá-yus' s ee-na-stráns-tsa-mee

Due to my work, I often communicate with foreigners.
Мы не ча́сто обща́емся.

my nye chás-ta ap-schá-eem-sya

We don't communicate often.

откры́ть [atk-rýt'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - открыва́ть

to open

Examples

Она́ пыта́лась откры́ть дверь, дёргая ру́чку, но та ника́к не поддава́лась.

a-ná py-tá-las' atk-rýt' dvyer', dyór-ga-ya rúch-ku, no ta nee-kák nye pad-da-vá-las'

She tried to open the door by pulling on the handle, but it wouldn't budge.
Он откры́л холоди́льник и ту́по уста́вился в него́.

on atk-rýl ha-la-déel-neek ee tú-pa us-tá-veel-sya v nee-vó

He opened the refrigerator and stared blankly into it.

лови́ть [la-véet'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - пойма́ть, слови́ть

to (try to) catch

Examples

Мы не раз лови́ли его́ на лжи.

my nye ras la-vée-lee ye-vó na lzhee

We've caught him lying more than once.
Он слу́шал внима́тельно, задава́л вопро́сы и лови́л ка́ждое сло́во учи́теля.

general; common, joint, mutual; total

Examples

Оказа́лось, что у нас мно́го о́бщих интере́сов.

It turned out that we have many common interests.
Рисова́ние благотво́рно влия́ет на о́бщее разви́тие малыша́.

He answered questions calmly and confidently.
