подойти́ [pa-daî-tée] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - подходи́ть

to come up to, to approach; to suit

Examples

Молодо́й челове́к подошёл к нам и предста́вился.

ma-la-dóî chee-la-vyék pa-da-shél k nam ee preets-tá-veel-sya

The young man came up to us and introduced himself.
Подойди́те побли́же к окну́.

pa-daî-dée-tye pa-blée-zhe k ak-nú

Come closer to the window.

ста́вить [stá-veet'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - поста́вить

to put, to place, to set, to stand

Examples

Э́та информа́ция ста́вит под сомне́ние всё, в чём мы ра́ньше бы́ли так уве́рены.

é-ta een-far-má-tsee-ya stá-veet pat sam-nyé-nee-ye fsyo, f chyom my rán'-she bý-lee tak u-vyé-ree-ny

This information casts doubt on everything that we were so sure of before.

nye staf' é-ta zdyes'

Don't put this here.

держа́ть [deer-zhát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - подержа́ть

to hold, to keep, to support

Examples

Держи́ меня́ за́ руку.

deer-zhée mee-nyá zá ru-ku

Hold my hand.
Она́ держа́ла в рука́х сто́пку книг.

a-ná deer-zhá-la v ru-káh stóp-ku kneek

She was holding a stack of books in her hands.

уви́деть [u-vée-deet'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - ви́деть

to see

Examples

Что ты там уви́дела?

chto ty tam u-vée-dee-la

What did you see there?
Не ду́мала, что когда́-нибу́дь уви́жу тако́е.

nye dú-ma-la, chto kag-dá nee-bút' u-vée-zhu ta-kó-ye

I didn’t think that I would ever see such a thing.

стоя́ть [sta-yát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - постоя́ть, устоя́ть

to stand, to be

Examples

Мы бу́дем твёрдо стоя́ть на своём.

my bú-deem tvyór-da sta-yát' na sva-yóm

We will stand our ground firmly.
Я стою́ в о́череди.

ya sta-ýu v ó-chee-ree-dee

I am standing in a queue.

сиде́ть [see-dyét'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - посиде́ть

to sit, to be seated

Examples

Он сиде́л на дива́не и чита́л журна́л.

on see-dyél na dee-vá-nye ee chee-tál zhur-nál

He was sitting on the couch and reading a magazine.
Мы не бу́дем сиде́ть сложа́ ру́ки.

my nye bú-deem see-dyét' sla-zhá rú-kee

We will not sit back.

поня́ть [pa-nyát'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - понима́ть

to understand, to comprehend; to see; to realize

Examples

Он по́нял, что переубеди́ть её не полу́чится.

on pó-nyal, chto pee-ree-u-bee-déet' ye-yó nye pa-lú-chee-tsa

He realized that he would not be able to convince her.
Мне сло́жно поня́ть э́ту то́чку зре́ния.

mnye slózh-na pa-nyát' é-tu tóch-ku zryé-nee-ya

I find it difficult to understand this point of view.

станови́ться [sta-na-vée-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - стать

to stand, to take one's stand; to become, to grow, to get

Examples

Жара́ станови́лась невыноси́мой.

zha-rá sta-na-vée-las' nee-vy-na-sée-maî

The heat was becoming unbearable.
Чем ста́рше стано́вишься, тем трудне́е вы́учить друго́й язы́к.

chyem stár-she sta-nó-veesh-sya, tyem tryd-née-ye vý-u-cheet' dru-góî ya-zýk

The older you get, the more difficult it is to learn another language.

стать [stat'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - станови́ться

to become

Examples

Ты кем хо́чешь стать, когда́ вы́растешь?

ty kyem hó-cheesh' stat', kag-dá vý-ras-téesh'

What do you want to become when you grow up?
Он стал леге́ндой престу́пного ми́ра.

on stal lee-gyén-daî prees-túp-na-va mée-ra

He became a legend in the criminal world.

знать [znat'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - узна́ть

to know

Examples

Ты что-нибу́дь зна́ешь об э́том?

ty chto-nee-bút' zná-eesh' ab é-tam

Do you know anything about it?
Они́ ничего́ не зна́ли о на́шем прие́зде.

a-née nee-chee-vó nye zná-lee a ná-shem pree-yéz-dye

They did not know anything about our arrival.
