Anita says:
Hello, I thought that the word after быть has to be in instrumental case, then why isn’t it so in the second example? Thanks.
Learn Russian Words says:
Hi Anita,
It’s the short form of adjective. It is in the Instrumental, but the short form does not have the ending, so you don’t see it.
You could say “зал ожидания был переполненным” using the long form.
There is a bit of info on short form of adjectives here: https://learnrussianstepbystep.com/en/short-form-of-adjectives/
Anita says:
Is there absolutely no difference between using the long and the short forms?
Anita says:
Are there any occasions when one should be used but not the other?
Learn Russian Words says:
In most cases, you can use both. It’s a matter of making your speech more laconic and natural, I would say.
As for is there any occasions then one should be used but not the other, I can not recall any. Probably not.
