Anita says:
Hello, in the first example, is it possible to use для вас instead of за вас? Both mean for you, but what’s the difference in usage? Thanks.
Learn Russian Words says:
Hi Anita,
They mean different things although translated the same in English.
Для вас is literally “for you”.
За вас, in this case, means “instead of you”. I made a choice for you because you were not there to make it for yourself. I chose instead of you.
I hope I managed to explain 🙂
Anita says:
Just to confirm, Для вас = for you as in for your benefit, За вас = for you as in on your behalf?
Learn Russian Words says:
That’s right. I was looking for exactly those words but they totally escaped me. )
You can use “за вас” in a sense “for your benefit” in such sentences as:
– Я болею за вас.
I’m rooting for you.
– За вас!
Cheers to you! (as a toast)
But not in a sentence as in the first example.
