  • Я взяла́ на себя́ сме́лость сде́лать вы́бор за вас.

    ya vzee-lá na see-byá smyé-last' sdyé-lat' vý-bar za vas

    I took the liberty (on myself) to make a choice for you.

  • Я не бу́ду надева́ть шарф, но возьму́ его́ с собо́й на вся́кий слу́чай.

    ya nye bú-du na-dee-vát' sharf, no vaz'-mú ye-vó s sa-bóî na fsyá-keeî slú-chaî

    I will not wear a scarf, but I will take it with me just in case.

  1. Hello, in the first example, is it possible to use для вас instead of за вас? Both mean for you, but what’s the difference in usage? Thanks.

      Hi Anita,

      They mean different things although translated the same in English.

      Для вас is literally “for you”.

      За вас, in this case, means “instead of you”. I made a choice for you because you were not there to make it for yourself. I chose instead of you.

          That’s right. I was looking for exactly those words but they totally escaped me. )

          You can use “за вас” in a sense “for your benefit” in such sentences as:

          – Я болею за вас.
          I’m rooting for you.

          – За вас!
          Cheers to you! (as a toast)

          But not in a sentence as in the first example.
