John says:
Hi. How can you tell someone in Russian that they are “on mute” (eg on a Zoom call?); how can you ask someone to “unmute” themselves? Many thanks
Learn Russian Words says:
Hi John,
Thanks for the interesting question.
We use a construction that literally means “put the sound/mic on/off”:
– “Unmute” yourself = включи(те) звук/микрофон
– “Mute yourself” = выключи(те) звук/микрофон
To tell someone that they are on mute, you can use:
– Я вас/тебя не слышу, включи(те) микрофон/звук.
– I can’t hear you, put the mic/sound on.
Or:
– У вас/тебя микрофон/звук выключен, включи(те).
– Your mic/sound is off, put it on.
