Anita says:
Hello, in the dictionary, the perfective of учи́ться is вы́учиться or научи́ться. Are they completely the same in meaning? Can I use вы́учиться in the second example? Thanks.
Learn Russian Words says:
Hi Anita,
Научиться is different from выучиться.
Научиться is usually used when someone learns to do something he could not do before and it does not matter how long it took:
– Она научилась водить машину.
She learned to drive a car.
– Ребенок научился считать до 10-ти.
The child learned to count to 10.
The prefix на- simbolizes something that was just added.
Выучиться is usually used when the process of learning takes time, when someone undergoes a training:
– Она выучилась на медсестру.
She studied to be a nurse.
– Он выучился на инженера.
He studied to be an engineer.
The prefix вы- here simbolizes a transition from one state to another, like in the verb вырасти (to grow up).
So выучиться does not really fit into the second example as the essense of the sentence is not in the time and effort it took but in the fact that it happened.
