Lourenço says:
Please, explain this construction: В тридцатые годы. Is it right? If yes, why? Thanks.
Learn Russian Daily says:
Hello Lourenço,
Yes, it’s totally correct. Literally it means “in 30th years”. It’s like saying “in 1930s” in English.
“Тридцатые” comes from “тридцатый” (30th). It’s in plural because “годы” is plural. It is also in the Prepositional case.
If you want to be specific about the century, you can say something like “в тридцатые годы восемнадцатого века” (lit. in 30th years of 18th century). If no reference to century made, we understand that it’s 1930s as it’s the closest one.
