Anita says:
Hello, why is как added after кро́ме in the second example? Could it be omitted? Thanks.
Learn Russian Words says:
Hello Anita,
Thanks for the interesting question again.
In this case, when a verbal constructions follows “кроме как”, omitting “как” would make the phrase sound not natural.
When “кроме” is followed by a noun, pronoun or a phrase without a verb, как shoud not be added at all:
– У меня нет здесь знакомых, кроме него.
I have no acquaintances here except him.
– Все пришли, кроме семьи Пироговых.
Everyone came, except for the Pirogov family.
But:
– У меня нет другого выбора, кроме как уехать.
I have no choice but to leave.
