What is your name? in Russian: How to say?

Jun 23, 2020 | How to say it in Russian?

To ask What’s your name? in Russian, you need to make a distinction about who you are talking to.

In informal situations (between friends or talking to people younger than you) you can say:

Как тебя́ зову́т?
[kak tee-byá za-vóot]
What’s your name?

In formal situations (talking to strangers, people older than you, etc.) you can say:

Как вас зову́т?
[kak vas za-vóot]
What’s your name?

The difference between two options is in the pronoun you use:

тебя́ comes from ты – informal you
вас comes from вы – formal or plural you
