Russian verbs used with the Instumental

The list of common Russian verbs often used with the Instrumental case.

Some of the verbs take the Instrumental case without any preposition, others require a preposition in front of the noun or a pronoun to be used with the Instrumental case.

Please note that not all of the given examples illustrate the use of the Instrumental case with the verbs.

подши́ть [pat-shéet'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - шить

to sew on / in, to hem, to line; to file

Examples

Пе́ред тем, как подши́ть джи́нсы, сле́дует пра́вильно отме́рить длину́.

pyé-reet tyem, kak pat-shéet' dzhéen-sy, slyé-du-eet prá-veel'-na at-myé-reet' dlee-nú

Before you hem jeans, you should measure the length correctly.
Возьми́ вон ту па́пку и подше́й в неё второ́й экземпля́р догово́ра.

vaz'-mée von tu páp-ku ee pat-shyéî v nee-yó vta-róî ek-zemp-lyár da-ga-vó-ra

Take that folder over there and put the second copy of the contract into it.

охо́титься [a-hó-tee-tsa] Verb, imperfective

to hunt, to chase

Examples

Импера́тор люби́л охо́титься в э́тих места́х.

eem-pee-rá-tar lyu-béel a-hó-tee-tsa v é-teeh mees-táh

The emperor liked to hunt in these places.
Со́вы охо́тятся но́чью, поэ́тому у них о́чень о́строе зре́ние и прекра́сный слух.

só-vy a-hó-tya-tsa nóch'-yu, pa-é-ta-mu u neeh ó-cheen' óst-ra-ye zryé-nee-ye ee pree-krás-nyî sluh

Owls hunt at night, so they have very sharp eyesight and excellent hearing.

обща́ться [ap-schá-tsa] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - пообща́ться

to communicate, to associate, to socialize

Examples

По до́лгу слу́жбы я ча́сто обща́юсь с иностра́нцами.

pa dól-du slúzh-by ya chás-ta ap-schá-yus' s ee-na-stráns-tsa-mee

Due to my work, I often communicate with foreigners.
Мы не ча́сто обща́емся.

my nye chás-ta ap-schá-eem-sya

We don't communicate often.

откры́ть [atk-rýt'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - открыва́ть

to open

Examples

Она́ пыта́лась откры́ть дверь, дёргая ру́чку, но та ника́к не поддава́лась.

a-ná py-tá-las' atk-rýt' dvyer', dyór-ga-ya rúch-ku, no ta nee-kák nye pad-da-vá-las'

She tried to open the door by pulling on the handle, but it wouldn't budge.
Он откры́л холоди́льник и ту́по уста́вился в него́.

on atk-rýl ha-la-déel-neek ee tú-pa us-tá-veel-sya v nee-vó

He opened the refrigerator and stared blankly into it.

пойма́ть [paî-mat'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - лови́ть

to catch

Examples

Мы пыта́лись пойма́ть такси́, но не ту́т-то бы́ло.

my py-tá-lees' paî-mát' tak-sée, no nye tut-ta bý-la

We tried to get a taxi, but no luck.
Пойма́в на себе́ его́ взгляд, она́ улыбну́лась.

paî-maf na see-byé ye-vó vzglyat, a-ná u-lyb-nú-las'

Having caught his eye on her, she smiled.

лови́ть [la-véet'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - пойма́ть, слови́ть

to (try to) catch

Examples

Мы не раз лови́ли его́ на лжи.

my nye ras la-vée-lee ye-vó na lzhee

We've caught him lying more than once.
Он слу́шал внима́тельно, задава́л вопро́сы и лови́л ка́ждое сло́во учи́теля.

on slú-shal vnee-má-teel'-na, za-da-vál va-pró-sy ee la-véel kázh-da-ye sló-va u-chée-tee-lya

He listened attentively, asked questions and hung on every word of the teacher.

пи́чкать [péech-kat'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - напи́чкать

to stuff with, to cram with, to dose with

Examples

Нас с де́тства у́чат нену́жным веща́м и пи́чкают нену́жной информа́цией.

nas s dyétst-va ú-chat nee-núzh-nym vee-scham ee péech-ka-yut nee-núzh-naî een-far-má-tsee-yeî

From childhood, we are taught unnecessary things and stuffed with unnecessary information.
До́ктор пи́чкал больно́го лека́рствами.

dók-tar péech-kal bal'-nó-va lee-kárst-va-mee

The doctor stuffed the patient with medicines.

отвеча́ть [at-vee-chát'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - отве́тить

to answer, to reply, to respond; to be responsible

Examples

На вопро́сы он отвеча́л споко́йно и уве́ренно.

na va-pró-sy on at-vee-chál spa-kóî-na ee u-vyé-reen-na

He answered questions calmly and confidently.
Госуда́рственный слу́жащий отвеча́ет за зако́нность свои́х де́йствий.

ga-su-dárst-veen-nyî slú-zha-scheeî at-vee-chá-eet za za-kón-nast' sva-éeh dyéîst-veeî

A civil servant is responsible for the legality of his actions.

вре́зать [vryé-zat'] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - вреза́ть

to cut in; to strike heavily, to give a sharp blow

Examples

Он реши́л вре́зать замо́к в дверь свое́й ко́мнаты.

on ree-shéel vryé-zat' za-mók v dvyer' sva-yéî kóm-na-ty

He decided to put a lock on the door of his room.
Он влепи́л ле́вый кула́к зади́ре в живо́т, а зате́м вре́зал пра́вым то́чно в подборо́док.

on vlee-péel lyé-vyî ku-lák za-dée-rye v zhee-vót, a za-tyém vryé-zal prá-vym tóch-na f pad-ba-ró-dak

He slammed his left fist into the bully's stomach, then struck his right fist into his chin.

кичи́ться [kee-chée-tsa] Verb, imperfective

to put on airs, to boast, to plume oneself, to brag

Examples

Он вы́глядел о́чень и́скренним и не кичи́лся деньга́ми.

on výg-lee-deel ó-cheen' ées-kreen-neem ee nye kee-chéel-sya deen'-gá-mee

He looked very sincere and did not boast of money.
У него́ нет привы́чки кичи́ться тем, чего́ он дости́г.

u nee-vó nyet pree-vých-kee kee-chée-tsa tyem, chee-vó on das-téek

He has no habit of boasting about what he has achieved.
