растеря́ться [ras-tee-ryá-tsa] Verb, perfective

to get lost / confused / puzzled, to lose one's head

Examples

Ко́стя не растеря́лся и бы́стро пришёл на по́мощь дру́гу.

kós-tya nye ras-tee-ryál-sya ee býst-ra pree-shól na pó-masch' drú-gu

Kostya was not taken aback and quickly came to the aid of a friend.
Он так растеря́лся, что забы́л, что собира́лся де́лать.

on tak ras-tee-ryál-sya, chto za-býl, chto sa-bee-rál-sya dyé-lat'

He got so confused that he forgot what he was going to do.

одино́чество [a-dee-nó-cheest-va] Noun, neuter

solitude, loneliness

Examples

Каза́лось, что он смири́лся с одино́чеством.

ka-zá-las', chto on smee-réel-sya s a-dee-nó-cheest-vam

He seemed to come to terms with loneliness.
Е́сли не научи́ться проща́ть, мо́жно оста́ться в го́рдом одино́честве.

yés-lee nye na-u-chée-tsa pra-schát', mózh-na as-tá-tsa v gór-dam a-dee-nó-cheest-vye

If you do not learn to forgive, you can find yourself alone (lit. - in proud loneliness).

ненави́деть [nee-na-vée-deet'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - возненави́деть

to hate, to loathe

Examples

Она́ ненави́дит стоя́ть в очередя́х.

a-ná nee-na-vée-deet sta-yát' v a-chee-ree-dyáh

She hates standing in line.
За что ты её так ненави́дишь?

za chto ty ye-yó tak nee-na-vée-deesh

Why do you hate her so much?

страх [strah] Noun, masculine

fear, fright

Examples

Его́ скова́л страх с головы́ до ног.

ye-vó ska-vál strah s ga-la-vý da nok

The fear shackled him from head to toe.
У стра́ха глаза́ велики́.

u strá-ha gla-zá vee-lee-kée

The eyes of fear see danger everywhere. (Lit: The fear has big eyes.)

красне́ть [kras-nyét'] Verb, imperfective. Perfective - покрасне́ть

to blush, to flush, to redden

Examples

Она́ красне́ет, когда́ на неё смо́трят мно́го люде́й.

a-ná kras-nyé-yet, kag-dá na nee-yó smót-ryat mnó-ga lyu-dyéî

She blushes when many people look at her.
Смотри́ на него́, врёт и не красне́ет.

smat-rée na nee-vó, vryót ee nye kras-nýe- yet

Look at him: he is lying and not blushing!

счастли́вый [schees-lée-vyî] Adjective

happy

Examples

Счастли́вые часо́в не наблюда́ют.

schees-lée-vy-ye chee-sóf nye na-blyu-dá-yut

Time passes quickly when you are happy. (Lit.: Happy people don't watch the clock.)
У него́ бы́ло счастли́вое де́тство.

u nee-vó bý-la schees-lée-va-ye dyéts-tva

He had a happy childhood.

мандра́ж [mánd-rásh] Noun, masculine

jitters

Examples

У меня́ мандра́ж пе́ред экза́меном.

u meen-nyá mand-rásh pyé-ryet ek-zá-mee-nam

I have jitters before the exam.
Он испы́тывал небольшо́й мандра́ж пе́ред выступле́нием на пу́блике.

on ees-pý-ty-val nee-bal'-shóî mand-rásh pyé-ryet vys-tup-lyé-nee-yem na púb-lee-kye

He experienced slight jitters before public speaking.

весёлый [vee-syó-lyî] Adjective

cheerful, joyful, merry

Examples

Он с весёлым ви́дом что́-то насви́стывал.

on s vee-syó-lym vée-dam chtó-ta na-svées-ty-val

He was whistling something looking joyful.
У неё дружелю́бный и весёлый нрав.

u nee-yó dru-zhee-lyúb-nyî ee vee-syó-lyî nraf

She has a friendly and cheerful personality.

боя́ться [ba-yá-tsa] Verb, imperfective

to be afraid, to fear, to dread

Examples

Малы́ш бои́тся темноты́.

ma-lýsh ba-ée-tsa teem-na-ty

The kid is afraid of the dark.
Я бою́сь, что друго́го вы́хода у нас нет.

ya ba-yús', chto dru-gá-va vý-ha-da u nas nyet

I am afraid that we have no other choice.

испуга́ться [ees-pu-gá-tsa] Verb, perfective. Imperfective - пуга́ться

to get scared, to get frightened

Examples

Она́ испуга́лась и закрича́ла.

a-ná ees-pu-gá-las' ee za-kree-chá-la

She got scared and started screaming.
Они́ рассчи́тывали, что мы испуга́емся, но не ту́т-то бы́ло.

a-née ras-chée-ty-va-lee, chto my ees-pu-gá-eem-sya, no nye tut-ta bý-la

They hoped that we would be frightened, but it was not the case.
