Russian Lesson of the Day

The Russian Lesson of the Day includes a series of quizzes based on the words and examples from our series Russian Word of the Day, as well as some grammar exercises (noun declension, verb aspects and conjugation). The lesson is designed to help you memorize the vocabulary you learn with us and practice your audio, writing and translation skills.

The content of the lesson is updated daily (from Monday to Friday). The words and sentences that appear in the lesson (parts 1 and 2) are picked by the method of spaced repetition which has proven its efficiency when it comes to learning new vocabulary and is used by many existing services. So if you come here every day, you can be sure that you repeat every word and practice every sentence a few times at different days.

Visit this page regularly to get the maximum effect of these exercises and make sure that you don't forget the words you learn with us and that your Russian vocabulary constantly grows. 🙂

If the audio does not play

For the period of two months, while there is no new words published (read more about it), the words and examples in two first exercises are picked randomly so you can continue practicing.

      Hello Marie,

We are aware of this problem and created a little note that explains it.

As much as we would really like to fix it, we simply don’t know how. We have asked the programming community on specialized forums to help us, but so far got 0 replies. So for now it is what it is.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to find a solution sooner or later.

      Hello André,

Well done! Sorry about the bug with the sound. Sooner of later, we will find a way to fix it.

Have a nice day you too! 🙂

  1. You developed a great site! Congratulations, I love it.
I have only one question (at this time :-)):
Concerning the exercise on the verb aspects, it would be very informative for me should there be an explanation why in each particular example the imperfective or perfective verb is used. (as you do already for the cases exercise). This can be very short, i.e. : one time use, repetitive action, finished action etc… To me it is not always clear why one or the other is used in some of the examples.

      Hello Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion. We are planning to introduce some more explanations to all the grammar quizzes, so this goes well along with that. Written down. 🙂

  2. I wold just like to say these lessons are geared up for people who are intermediate to advanced.
They have been developed by people who were taught a grammatical way. There is no room for beginners in these daily lessons. Many of the sentences used are just totally abstract of no use in daily life.

I believe it needs a complete over haul and total relook from out of the box. Look at how children learn – they are not given grammer grammer grammer

For a beginner who has learnt many words, for survival Russian the next step is simple conversation.
I would suggest you make up simple conversations examples,
    Introduction in the present tense,
Something that happed now, yesterday and in the future – a walk in the park – so one can see the difference. same with all the subjects below.
Subjects encapsulated should be everyday things –
How are you? Welcome to my home/ going out to the cinema
    Shopping
    Weather
    Games/sports
    Body/medical/Dentist/doctor
    Directions
    Holidays
    Driving/riding a bike/ a horse
    Watching TV/listening to the radio…
    Cookiing
    Bathroom – toilet/bath/shower etc..
    Going to bed.
    Concerts/Night clubs/Restaurants….
The subjects are endless but relevant to ones live

    Not
    Хватит ссориться из-за пустяков!
    Enough quarreling over small things!

    Хватит … из-за пустяков!
    Мы вчера реально оплошали.
    We really blundered yesterday.
    Мы вчера реально [оплошать].
to pay, to pay off, to settle accounts
Я взяла две [штука] – одну на сейчас и одну про запас.
I took two pieces – one for now and one in store.

I am never going to use any of those phases sorry. I understand it is to get the correct noun or verb or tense thereof of the context would be helpful if it was relevant to modern life and living and it’s situation.

I shall still use the flashcards to increase my vocab, but I do not see anything else here that gets me from words to sentences and therefore conversation. Maybe I am missing something.

Maybe an idea to consider – is provide a list of Russian words with translation then form a simple conversation between two people.
Then introduce another set of words and introduce them to the same conversation there by increasing someones knowledge. I would suggest due to grammatical complexities of Russian, you provide conversations in Past/Present and Future tense and maybe explain in the introduction plurals of words or in the list of Russian words with there English translation.
In the introduction you could provide verb conjugation etc.. and other varients.

    These are my thoughts.

      Hello Andi,

Thank you for your thoughts, you mentioned a few interesting points and we’ll use them in the future lessons.

You might find something closer to what you are talking about on another site of ours – https://learnrussianstepbystep.com/. This site is designed particularly for beginners and has both grammar and vocabulary lessons.

Learn Russian Words is the Russian Word of the Day first and foremost. The lesson of the day is created because it would be a shame for us not to try to make the most of all these words and examples we have collected, and, more importantly, because many people find it beneficial for their practice.

We do invite beginners to try themselves with the exercises, but if it’s too difficult and just demotivates, then no point. However, there is only a short period of time when you are a beginner, you should try again when you feel like having something more challengable. We suggest to subscribe to the newsletter, it includes a different set of exercises, and do only those that you can do. With time you will be able to do the most (if not all) of them. Also, the newsletter comes with a series of links to other lessons which you might want to check out that day to refresh your knowledge.

And if you have ideas on how we could improve on what we have, about any of the websites of ours (you can see them all here – https://learnrussian101.com/network/), they are always welcome as the ones you already mentioned.

What it highlighted, though, is the fact that we should probably communicate about the level of the questions in the quizzes. We’ll think about how to put it better.

      Thank you

      Hi Steef,

The lesson exercises are shown randomly and we can not know what exactly you’ve seen. Can you please let us know what exactly the mistake is about? Thank you.

  3. Hi, it’s not a question but a suggestion: in the translation exercises, it would be good to add an intermediate qualification between Correct and Wrong; something like “almost correct”, or “approx”, or “not wrong”, etc., that rescues the positive of what the student has been able to answer.

    • Learn Russian Words says:

      Hi Oğuzhan,

      Thanks for your comment.
We do use Ё most of the time, it’s just in some old words and examples we still have Е instead and did not have time to find and correct it.

    • Learn Russian Words says:

      Hi Oğuzhan,

      Thanks for your comment.

The translation of the sentence is given right there. From it, you can judge about the meaning and pick the correct aspect.
