Russian words for beginners

In the section “Russian Words for Beginners” you can find basic Russian vocabulary that will help you to gain some confidence in making basic conversations and don’t look for your words when you want to express some simple ideas in Russian.

ни́зкий [néez-keeî] Adjective

low, short

Examples

Потолки́ в кварти́ре бы́ли о́чень ни́зкими.

pa-tal-kée v kvar-tée-rye bý-lee o-cheen' néez-kee-mee

The ceilings in the apartment were very low.

You can only cross the road at the green light of the traffic lights.

симпати́чный [seem-pa-téech-nyî] Adjective

pretty, handsome, likable, attractive

Examples

Но́вый па́рень в на́шем кла́ссе о́чень симпати́чный.

nó-vyî pá-ryen' v ná-shem klás-sye ó-cheen' seem-pa-téech-nyî

The new guy in our class is very handsome.
У неё бы́ло симпати́чное лицо́ и больши́е голубы́е глаза́.

маршру́тка [marsh-rút-ka] Noun, feminine, comes from "маршру́тное такси́"

fixed-route taxi (minibus)

Examples

Маршру́тки опя́ть подорожа́ли.

marsh-rút-kee a-pyát' pa-da-ra-zhá-lee

Prices for fixed-route taxi again went up.
Мне от до́ма до рабо́ты 15 мину́т на маршру́тке.

mnye at dó-ma da ra-bó-ty peet-ná-tsat' mee-nút na marsh-rút-kye

It takes me 15 minutes by fixed-route taxi from home to work.

kind, good

Examples

До́брые лю́ди помогли́ нам всё устро́ить.

Good people helped us to arrange everything.
У неё бы́ли до́брые глаза́.
